Small businesses need to create an effective business blog but many fall at the first hurdle. It’s often the job that gets left at the bottom of the pile, and I completely understand why.
Everyone is telling you must have a good business blog. But very few people tell you exactly what you need to do to create one and then write it long-term. Not everyone has the finances to employ a ghost writer or content manager, but if writing doesn’t come naturally to you, it’s hard to even get started.

- Don’t do it because you have to, do it because you love supporting your business and want to share your passion for your niche.
- If you can’t write, or don’t feel you have the skills or the time, outsource the job. It’s much better to do it effectively than have poorly written posts.
- Build your blog on your business website if you can. Host it on WordPress or your current platform for seamless integration and a sensible strategy for reaching a new audience.
- Don’t see your business blog as a way to advertise your products; it’s definitely not the way to create an effective business blog, and the biggest mistake businesses do when creating their content.
- Do see your business blog as a way to connect with your audience, showcase your products into a lifestyle and build trust as an expert in your field.
- Create a tool that helps you market your brand and offer inspiration to your readers. Above all, it should go further than just your brand and offer other ideas to help your readers expand their knowledge around and beyond your niche.
- Research other blogs in your niche which inspire you, save them and read regularly. Make notes on what they do well, what you would like to replicate and how you can achieve the type of content you’d like your business to showcase.
- Understand that your blog posts will need to be shared on your social media channels to help them be seen. Find a way to bring your ideas to your followers without making a sales pitch.
- Before you begin, plan the type of content you’d like to create. Build features and series’ of posts that will help you create articles when inspiration is lacking. This is one of the key aspects to creating your effective business blog.
- Identify your audience and ensure your content is written for them. Write in the 3rd person, but in a friendly, informal tone suitable for the person you’re speaking to. Make posts informative, chatty and useful. Give them hints and tips, ideas and inspirations, helping them develop and build on their choices.
- When you write each post, section it out with headings and imagery. Long bursts of text are no fun to read and put people off. Keep articles to the point, useful and helpful. Show your customers how they can enjoy a lifestyle which fits both you and your business.
- If you don’t have your own imagery to use, find copyright free versions on sites like Unsplash and Pixabay. Do not take images from Google, Pinterest or other blogs and pass them off as your own.Even crediting the source doesn’t give you rights to use the imagery, so never do this.
- End each blog post with a call to action. Encourage interaction, whether on the blog post or social posts and help them engage with your content.
- Ensure your blog post is properly optimised for search. Choose a keyword and run it through the blog post, adding it in the SEO title, the headings, the beginning and end of the post as well as the meta description. Images should be tagged with it as well.
- Run giveaways on your blog to win your products or services. Ensure you understand the legal implications but this is a great way to get interaction and more interest in your blog and website.
- Add extra value to all your blog posts, encourage readers to find your other relevant content on the blog or where they can find out more about the topic. Even go so far as to offer them free downloads, exclusive offers or to be part of your Facebook community.
